| Sept. 12, 10 AM - 4 PM and Sept. 13, 9 AM - 3 PM | 2-day bookmaking workshop with Anna Tomczak This workshop focuses on various methods of integrating photographs into the surface of a variety of art papers, cloth, canvas, plexi or metal. The intent is to express a visual idea in the form of a unique book with wide creative latitude. Bookbinding styles and bookmaking methods are demonstrated and/ or discussed. Non-silver photo processes are emphasized and include photocopy transfer, and Polaroid emulsion lifts and transfers. Text methods are demonstrated, such as rubber stamp, press type, digital text, and embossing. Hand letter press is also discussed. Examples of surface treatments are shown, such as coating with wax and hand painting. The workshop emphasizes the photographic image, but is not limited to this and will include other modes of expression - drawing, poetry, collage, and illustrations. You will learn skills that you can continue to use in art and bookmaking in your home or studio. This workshop is for all levels. $50 for members, $90 for nonmembers, $10 material fee for all participants. Space is limited. RSVP by September 4, |

| Sept. 21, 3 PM | Senior Sunday John Rich discusses his Miles to Go: Portraits of Elite Senior Athletes project. Rich has photographed and interviewed men and women in their 70s, 80s, and 90s who continue to compete athletically and are among the best in the world in their sport. | Sept. 21, 2 – 5 PM | Join the Griffin Museum for a collaborative adventure with Zoo New England's Stone Zoo. Rebecca Norris Webb, author of The Glass Between Us, leads a safari photo shoot at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham. Webb has photographed animals in zoos and aquariums in some 30 cities around the world. The safari is limited to 15 people (children 12 or over are welcome, but must have their own camera and must be accompanied by one adult per child). Panel discussion on building safe havens, holy places, sites of renewal and retreat With our exhibit Sanctuary as a backdrop, architect and educator John McConnell moderates a panel discussion of industry experts including Noah Bierman, journalist for the Boston Globe; Diane Georgopulos of Mass Housing and president of the Boston Society of Architects; Ross Miller , public art installation artist and educator; and Peter Vanderwalker, architectural photographer and author. Join our panelists in a lively discussion on sanctuaries that are successful and those that are not.
